The Shepherd’s Hut
Astrid Fitzgerald
When Caroline reached the gully, her heart was racing and her stomach was in a tight knot. Was what had happened yesterday just a dream? Was she ever going to experience the peace and warmth she’d felt again? Perhaps she should just keep going. What happened to the quiet, fun-filled ski vacation her father talked about? Things couldn’t possibly get any more hectic and perplexing. She leaned against a tree, taking some deep breaths to calm herself before she dared approach the decrepit shepherd’s hut.
The door sprang open at the touch of her hand, revealing Luma in all her splendor. The ceaseless swirling of her garments made it difficult to tell whether she was sitting on the mound of cushions, or floating above it. She appeared in an entirely different attire than the previous day and her face look somewhat different too – her eyes looking deeper than the ocean and her forehead gleaming with the radiance of the sun.
As Caroline stepped into the light, which appeared to be emerging from a source that was nowhere, yet everywhere, she was enveloped in comforting warmth, releasing her whole being from anxiety and tension. She bowed to Luma, and sat down on the cushion before her.
“Welcome, my dear child!” Luma’s face beamed with an immense smile. “I know it was not easy to tear yourself away from your new friend.”
Caroline’s mouth fell open. How did she know about Lorenzo?
Before she dared ask, Luma began to speak. Continue reading The Shepherd’s Hut

Refrain from all Criticism
Astrid Fitzgerald
Some twenty years ago I attended a week-long spiritual retreat, hungry for some spiritual food – some illuminating morsels of wisdom that would shed some light on my reason for existence. After early morning mediation, my group was told to get into work clothes for house cleaning. What has this got to do with self-knowledge, I wondered.
“The practice for this week will be to refrain from all criticism,” the tutor said. “At the end of the work session each one will have an opportunity to offer your observations.”
That’s a cinch, I said to myself, I’m not a critical person. It wasn’t until the tutor instructed us to pause and reflect that I realized I had been flagrantly engaged in faulting the women next to me for getting the floor too wet and silently telling her where to go. How did the tutor know I had been criticizing?
When the work session was finally over, I was exhausted – exhausted from trying to refrain from all criticism, failing woefully and ending up criticizing myself.
Later I learned from the group that everyone had much the same experience. That didn’t make me feel any better.
After I took part in many more work session and years of practicing objective self-observation, the value of refraining from all criticism and expressing negative thoughts became clear to me. In effect, this practice leads to the purification of mind and heart – a prerequisite on the spiritual path. Continue reading Refrain from all Criticism

Cleaning out Clutter
Astrid Fitzgerald
We cling to so many things in life without which we believe we simply cannot be happy or even survive. Often we resolve to clean out the closet to get rid of unnecessary clutter and find ourselves stuffing most of it back – just in case! Some of us find it difficult to part with objects and mementos of the past, and many of us are pack rats to one degree or another. This may seem like an innocent habit, but when we consider that our outer world is an accurate reflection of our inner world, we must think again. The clutter in our minds and hearts caused by wrong thinking and feeling is not so innocent, since it is the cause for much of our unhappiness. The accumulations in the subconscious mind exert an even greater influence on our lives. The impressions left in the subtle and causal bodies by past thoughts, feelings, and actions determine the measure of love, happiness, and freedom we are able to experience in this life.
It is easiest to begin the process of cleaning out with the exterior world. There is no doubt that it is very helpful to clean out excessive material clutter to simplify existence and to remove the things that invite us to indulgence and emotional reactions. Moreover cleaning our living quarters and closets may prove to be a wonderful exercise in preparation for the quest, since learning to let go on this material level will help us later in the practice of renunciation. It also shows that these objects have no true value and fail to give lasting happiness. Most often we want things in a given instant because we feel needy and because we do not know how to understand this insistent need. As a result we end up with many possessions when in fact what we truly desire is sustenance for our minds, hearts, and souls, and ultimately everlasting happiness and love. The Power of Ignorance
Astrid Fitzgerald
I do not understand war – conflict on a large scale. I’ve never been able to wrap my mind around the concept of killing people, whether it is to gain dominion, to claim land and natural resources, to impose a belief system, to suppress the desire for freedom, equality and justice, or whether it is to crush the spirit and joy of life of an indigenous people.
Why can’t there be an end to this mindless bloodshed? Why don’t they just stop this madness once and for all? These questions, tinged with wishful thinking, I realize, are useless and frivolous. Moreover, “they is us” and conflict exists on many levels in subtle shades of grey, as I’ve discovered when I truthfully examine my own heart and mind.
Fortunately, I live in a country with relative freedoms, without overt conflict, and have escaped indoctrination of the extreme kind – tyranny, fascism, suppression, religious fanaticism – resulting in hatred against another people, giving licence to suicide bombings – the destruction of one’s own precious life for the sake of independence, in the name of conviction or for the triumph of retaliation. Sometimes it seems that the unfortunate people living in constant terror in the war-torn areas of the Mid-East are past any measure of hope, goodwill and compromise. Even if a cease fire can be imposed on the warring parties, and agreements are signed and sealed, it will take eons to eradicate the ancient and deeply held dogmas and beliefs that led to the hatred and bloodshed in the first place. Or so, I theorize, when I’m looking at the external situation from my ordinary, limited point of view. Continue reading The Power of Ignorance
