There are hospitals in China for foreigners and hospitals for the Chinese. However, a foreigner can use a hospital intended for Chinese. In a Chinese hospital, food is not provided. Family or friends bring in the food. In a hospital intended for foreigners, food is provided along with other luxury services and the price goes up. While in China, my wife has been in both types and it seems the best doctors are assigned to hospitals that cater to the wealthy and foreigners.

[...] In a post at Speak Without Interruption, an online magazine, Lloyd Lofthouse, author of My Splendid Concubine , comments on how health care in China is following the American private health care model down a path that will lead to greater inequality in health provision. In 141 B.C.E., more than two thousand years ago, a new Han emperor came to sit on the Dragon Throne….Wudi believed that all people should have the right to buy certain commodities and not be priced out of the market.
Hi Mr. Lofthouse,

It seems, too, that there is little justification for 'American Standard' care in China to be priced at American prices, other than the fact that a lot of 'American standard' hospitals are foreign owned and take private insurance from abroad.

I would love to see more health entrepreneurs develop a new, wholly Chinese private health identity that better reflects the cost structure of Chinese business.

I've written several articles about his, but the two most relevant are probably "Private Health Care with Chinese Characteristics," and "When Accessing Health Care in Beijing, See the Forest for the Trees". Both can be found at Asia Health Care Blog.

So you know, I will be linking to this site and highlighting this article.

Best,
//Damjan
